The Future for Canadian Sport Excellence Awaits

WinSport Canada's vision is to build the nation's first winter sport institute, which will rejuvenate and modernize the existing facilities from the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in southern Alberta, while adding new facilities necessary to advance Canada's ranking in international sports.

Canadian Winter Sport Institute will be the incubator for high performance Canadian athletes and a place that develops and inspires young people to be the best they can be. Canadian Winter Sport Institute will be the first facility of its kind in Canada and one of the only training facilities in the world where athletes from many different sport backgrounds can come together and learn from each other's success. Canadian Winter Sport Institute will be a place where state-of-the-art training facilities, research, coaching, clinicians and sportsmanship are blended together to create one of the most unique athletic environments in the world.

Canadian Winter Sport Institute is not just about elite athletes, however, it is about a vision for Canada - a vision that will create a more prosperous nation. It is about the international doors that will be opened by hosting many globally televised competitions every year. It is about tourism, our national and international image, economic activity and the unparalleled opportunities it will provide for our children.
Our Visionary Plan

Calgary is the perfect location for the Canadian Winter Sport Institute because the 1988 Olympic investment was made here, the city's altitude and proximity to the mountains gives athletes a distinct edge over competitors, and the climate is conducive to winter sports.
Project Cost
Athletic Ice Complex at C.O.P. $ 231 million
To date, the federal government has committed $40 million, the provincial government a total of $69 million over three years and the City of Calgary a total of $20 million.
The Impact
Top
WinSport Canada is committed to supporting Canada's rise as a world-leading sports nation while at the same time expanding recreational opportunities and programs that inspire the pursuit of excellence and a healthy lifestyle. The inherent value of the Canadian Winter Sport Institute is that families can spend quality time actively participating in sports and be side by side with elite athletes – this is the start of the legacy.

On an individual level, the Canadian Winter Sport Institute will encourage healthy lifestyles by providing everyone with access to positive, Olympic and Paralympic-level role models for fitness, discipline and team work. On a national level, it will develop elite athletes, enhance our national economy, increase international tourism into our country and place Canada squarely in the international limelight.

Canadian Winter Sport Institute will transform Canada Olympic Park into a unique, world-leading facility, allowing us to:
  • 1. Drive up the medal count at World Cup, Olympic and Paralympic competitions for Canadian athletes;
  • 2. Nurture and develop high-performance athletes;
  • 3. Provide leading edge and world competitive facilities;
  • 4. Create and encourage a healthier lifestyle for Canadians by offering the best recreational facilities; and
  • 5. Bolster international tourism into Canada.
Excellence for Everyone

The race for excellence has no finish line and Canada will fall behind if it does not adopt a fully integrated approach to developing elite athletes. Around the world, countries are developing facility-based sport institutes as their national high-performance sports centres.

These institutes form a basis for encouraging operating efficiencies of national sport organizations, providing access to world-class support services and leading-edge sports research. The benefits extend to coaching, cross-training and educating athletes, and hosting of national and international events. These sport institutes become hubs for tourism, attracting millions of dollars, as well as offering spin-off, non-quantifiable benefits to local communities; in terms of access to high quality facilities, and the inspirational leadership models of locally-trained winning athletes.

It is time to reinvest in sport and WinSport Canada is again taking the lead. Now, after the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are over, investment must continue to occur so the legacy for 2014 and beyond can develop.
