Canadian Olympic Committee

The Canadian Olympic Committee is a national, private, not-for-profit organization committed to sport excellence. It is responsible for all aspects of Canada's involvement in the Olympic movement, including Canada's participation in the Olympic and Pan American Games and a wide variety of programs that promote the Olympic Movement in Canada through cultural and educational means.

First recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1907, the COC has evolved into a multi-faceted sport organization providing financial support, services and leadership to the Canadian amateur high performance sport community. As one of the founding partners of Canadian Sport Centres across Canada, the COC is dedicated to providing athletes with the most comprehensive services available.

Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC)

The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) is a not for profit, charitable organization that is a member of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The CPC’s role is to deliver programs that promote and strengthen the Paralympic movement in Canada and providing sport opportunities for persons with physical disabilities.

Four (4) national sport organisations the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing, Canadian Amputee Sports Association, Canadian Blind Sports Association and the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association came together in 1979 to create the founding coordinating committee the Canadian Federation of Sport Organisations for the Disabled (CFSOD)

In 1982 with the success and continued growth of the Paralympic Movement the International Co-Ordination Committee of World Sports Organisations for the Disabled (ICC) was formed to be the voice of the Paralympic associations to the International Olympic Committee.

In 1989 the ICC becomes the International Paralympic Committee, closely followed by CFSOD who in 1993 changed their name to the current Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC).

Own The Podium 2010 was formed in 2005 as a commitment to Canada's winter athletes to provide solid support from the training grounds to the finish line. The initiative is a collaborative effort supported by all of Canada's winter national sport organizations with the ultimate goal of helping Canada's winter athletes win the greatest number of medals at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and to place in the top three nations (gold medal count) at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.

For the second time in 22 years, Canada will play host to the Olympic Winter Games – the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. The Olympic events, held over 17 days in February, are expected to draw 5,500 Olympic athletes and officials from more than 80 countries around the world. An anticipated 1,350 athletes from more than 40 countries are expected to compete in the Paralympic events in March.

With a television audience of three billion worldwide, and a total of 10,000 accredited media, a host of exciting stories will come out of the Games.

The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), established on September 30, 2003, is responsible for supporting and promoting the development of sport in Canada by planning, organizing, financing and staging the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

VANOC is guided by a 20-member board of directors nominated by the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, the City of Vancouver, the Resort Municipality of Whistler, the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Canadian Paralympic Committee and local First Nations.
