In 1988, the Winter Olympic Games arrived in Canada for 16 days in February. Attended by 57 nations and 1,423 athletes, it was crowned the most successful Games ever. The legacy of these Games continues today as WinSport Canada progresses toward the creation of the first Canadian Winter Sport Institute. The Centre's aim is to provide Canadian athletes with the high-performance training opportunities and facilities they require to reach the podium and realize their dreams.
The commitment to winter sport and the continued investment and enhancement of the WinSport Canada's facilities ensures the legacy survives. Since the 1988 Olympics, the cost for maintaining a world-class facility can be divided into two distinct areas; upgrades/maintenance costs and new facilities, with a combined total cost of $35,811,475 that include:
1994 - National Sport School opens through a partnership between WinSport Canada and the Calgary Board of Education
2001 - The Ice House opens at Canada Olympic Park venue, adding to the growing number of high-performance facilities
2002 - 15 ft halfpipe is created
2003 - The Calgary Gymnastics Centre opens its doors to Canada's gymnastics teams and the winter sports including snowboard, freestyle and ski jumping.
2005 - Camp Green on Farnham Glacier opens as a summer glacier training facility for alpine, snowboard and freestyle, skiercross, boardercross and now the Para-alpine team
2006 - The 22-foot halfpipe opens, built to international standards it provides a world-class training and competition facility
2006 - The freestyle aerials and moguls site is unveiled, utilizing the east side of the ski jump bowl with an adjacent alpine slalom course
2007 - Expansion of the Bill Warren Training Centre is completed to improve the high-performance training facilities for the nordic sport groups
2007 - Cross-country trails at Canada Olympic Park are expanded
In addition to the WinSport Canada owned facilities, we also continue to provide funding to the Olympic Oval in Calgary for the ongoing support of speed skating programs in Canada.
The next step in WinSport Canada's mission to continue this great legacy and provide first class training facilities for Canadian athletes will be the opening of the crown jewel of the Canadian Winter Sport Institute.
WinSport Canada continues to provide financial support for sanctioned sports events at Canada Olympic Park totaling over $700,000 for the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 winter seasons. Events supported by WinSport Canada include various World Cups, nationals and provincials.
