FUTURE The Athletic and Ice Complex (AIC) will be one of the most unique athletic environments in the world and the focal point of the Canadian Winter Sport Institute. Designed with extensive input from athletes, coaches and various national sport organizations, the AIC will make a bold statement and have a tremendous impact on the future of Canadian sport excellence.

Sprawling in size, the 500,000 square foot AIC will be the future home of Hockey Canada, WinSport Canada and the head offices of close to 20 national and provincial winter sport organizations.

The AIC will be one of the only training facilities of its kind where athletes and sport organizations from many different sport backgrounds can come together and learn from each other’s success. This facility will combine the sport sciences, athlete support services and leading-edge facilities into a sport institute model.

The AIC symbolizes Canada’s commitment to sport, to our nation’s athletes and to the importance of healthy, active lifestyles for all Canadians. Never before have such human and technical resources been assembled in one spot in Canada.

AIC Construction Updates
Top
Construction of the Athletic and Ice Complex began in May 2008, with work originally focused at ground level and below. The stripping and grading of the site was completed and the pilings started to go in. By early 2009 1,500 structural piles had been installed with up to five rigs at the peak piling stages. Installation of the piles in front of the Ice House facility has been deferred until after the 2010 Olympic Winter Games to accommodate the training schedules of Canada's athletes. Those piles will be completed in early 2010.

All of the footings and grade beams have been poured and the pre-cast concrete which provides the basic structure of the International Rink (Rink 1) and the public concourse is now clearly visible from the TransCanada Highway. The towering pre-cast columns area all in place and are waiting to be crowned with the massive glulam beams. The precast concrete seating bowl, bleachers, structural columns, and external walls have all been installed and the floor slabs are now being poured. The concrete stairwells and elevator shafts have all been poured in rink #1, the office tower and the high performance sport development centre. The installation of the electrical, mechanical systems and the refrigeration plant are all underway inside while the structural steel for rinks 2, 3 and 4 is erected. The gorgeous wooden glulam beams and purlins are being mounted on the steel structure, with the roof of rink #2 just starting to go on. The steel structure and

Site works is at a very advanced stage of completion with all shallow and deep utilities installed. The storm water management network is in place, including a new storm pond. The road system - south, west and north roads - surrounding the Athletic and Ice Complex have been completed and paved. The last piece of this construction, the road leading up to Victory Plaza, will be finished in conjunction with the plaza surface.

While the Facility Development team completed the project design to satisfaction, the work on the interior final designs continues. This includes signage, flooring, wall decoration and much more. The Project Management team continues to focus on contracting and is please to advise that the projected final construction cost of the complex is presently estimated at $222 million, a $27 million savings from the projects original budget.

Rinks 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be completed and open to the public by December 15, 2010. We will continue to provide updates to this exciting project.

The pursuit of excellence and medal performances at all levels is a common goal in sport. This project will create more winners for Canada and facilities that allow us to be more competitive internationally. Bob Nicholson President, Hockey Canada
