FUTURE The Athletic and Ice Complex (AIC) will be one of the most unique athletic environments in the world and the focal point of the Canadian Winter Sport Institute. Designed with extensive input from athletes, coaches and various national sport organizations, the AIC will make a bold statement and have a tremendous impact on the future of Canadian sport excellence.

Sprawling in size, the 500,000 square foot AIC will be the future home of Hockey Canada, WinSport Canada and the head offices of close to 20 national and provincial winter sport organizations.

The AIC will be one of the only training facilities of its kind where athletes and sport organizations from many different sport backgrounds can come together and learn from each other’s success. This facility will combine the sport sciences, athlete support services and leading-edge facilities into a sport institute model.

The AIC symbolizes Canada’s commitment to sport, to our nation’s athletes and to the importance of healthy, active lifestyles for all Canadians. Never before have such human and technical resources been assembled in one spot in Canada.

Office Tower

The structural steel main support of each floor is in now place. The concrete sub-floors on levels  1 - 3 of the Office Tower are completed and the utilities, i.e.: electrical, piping and wiring are ruffed-in. Floors 4 and 5 have their metal decking in place and the prepping for the concrete sub floors is close to completion, expected to be poured within the next 2 weeks. All the walls are finished and following completion of the last floor, the roof and exterior glazing will be installed.

Rinks 2,3,4

The exterior shell (exterior walls and roof) is complete and weather tight, allowing us to start the final steps within the interior. The majority of light fixtures, mechanical piping and ductwork are installed and we can now pick up the detail finishing. The east parking lot has been paved and the landscaping is well under way to complete before winter. The refrigeration slab in Rink 2 was poured on Aug 23; Rink 3 and 4 will follow on Sept 15th and 17th. 80% of the dressing rooms are completed to finishing stage. This gives us the green light to proceed with the washroom fixtures and install the skate flooring. All major equipment and field piping is in place to support the refrigeration plant. Wiring, sequencing and charging of the system will continue over the next two months and is scheduled to be completed early October.

International Rink

The gluelam beams' north section and half of the south section are in place and we are waiting to receive the final center sections by mid to late September. To ensure weather tight status by year end, we are in the midst of finishing off the lower wall sections. Dressing rooms and service areas are being prepped for grade slabs and interior block walls.

High Performance Center

We anticipate completion of the deep and shallow services within the next two weeks which will allow the start of the grade slab prep work. Structural steel will follow and provide the overall magnitude and scale of this state of the art facility.

Budget

New estimate is at $215 million to complete the project.

The pursuit of excellence and medal performances at all levels is a common goal in sport. This project will create more winners for Canada and facilities that allow us to be more competitive internationally. Bob Nicholson President, Hockey Canada
