Building the future of canadian sport Support Sport Excellence
The following are CANADA WINS frequently asked questions:
What is CANADA WINS™?
Top
CANADA WINS™ is the $110 million capital campaign for WinSport Canada. Funds raised will contribute to the construction of the Athletic and Ice Complex (AIC) and upgrades to existing facilities making WinSport Canada our nation’s first winter sport institute.
How do I donate?
Top
We are grateful for your support and interest in our campaign. The easiest way to make your donation is online. However, if you would like more information prior to making your donation, please contact us at canadawins@winsportcanada.ca.
How will my donation help?
Top
Your donation will fund the AIC construction as well as finance additional upgrades to existing facilities. Our vision is to create the first Canadian Winter Sport Institute and your donation is an important step in this direction. These new facilities and the sport institute model will give Canadian athletes the tools and support they need to make Canada the number one winter sport nation.
How are the upgrades, construction and operations going to be financed?
Top
Existing facility upgrades and AIC construction will be financed through three areas: first, all three levels of government have given their support and pledged $129 million for the project; WinSport Canada will provide an additional $60 million through an extensive land monetization project of approximately 85 acres of surplus land surrounding Canada Olympic Park (COP); and the third area of funding is the $110 million CANADA WINS campaign. Operational expenses will be financed through existing endowment funds.
When will the AIC be completed?
Top
The expected completion date of the AIC is mid 2011.
What components will be included in the AIC?
Top
Four hockey rinks: three NHL sized rinks and one international sized rink.

A high performance facility (including running tracks and workout area) and sport development facility.

An office tower will be home to WinSport Canada, Hockey Canada and other national and provincial sport organizations. Office space is also available for corporations interested in the prime location on the TransCanada Highway.

Meeting and catering venues, commissary, concessions and a public market café will complete the set up.

The combined size of the complex will be approximately 500,000 square feet.
Does this mean that COP will have to cut back on its summer and winter
programs in order to accommodate the new facilities?
Top
No. If anything, there will be more variety for children, teens and adults. Donations for the AIC do not just include funding for the complex but for the whole Park and will give us the opportunity to extend our programs and operations.
Will the high performance centre be accessible to the public?
Top
We will have a designated area that is reserved for developing and high performance athletes. However, we will have a public workout area that will allow members to experience the benefits of exercise and sport. In addition, the hockey rinks will be available for community hockey, ringette and soccer.
What will happen to the National Sport School?
Top
The Ernest Manning High School will be closed by 2010. Our intention is to move the National Sport School to COP and designate an area that will be home to the school going forward. This will allow our young athletes to meet their school requirements as well as being close to the institute’s sports and training amenities to help them reach their goals of podium success.
How much of my donation will be used for upgrades and to build the AIC?
Top
After administrative costs, it is estimated that 0.85 cents of every dollar donated to the CANADA WINS campaign will be used for Athletic and Ice Complex construction and existing facility upgrades.
If I have difficulty donating online, what can I do?
Top
Please send us an email at canadawins@winsportcanada.ca and we will resolve any issue or complication you might experience.
Where is the Athletic and Ice Complex located?
Top
The AIC is located at Canada Olympic Park, 88 Canada Olympic Road S.W., Calgary, AB, T3B 5R5.
