Covid-19

We look forward to welcoming you back safely.

This winter season will look much different than previous seasons with several critical changes taking place due to COVID-19 and safety being the top priority for guests and for our Team Members.

Some of the key changes include:

  • The hill will be open to passholders only to start the season, with no walk-up (day) tickets available until further notice.
  • All passholders planning to come to the hill are required to book a time online with WinSport’s new reservation system.
  • No foot traffic or spectators will be allowed anywhere on the hill.
  • Guests are asked to dress for the day at their vehicle and leave all personal items locked in their vehicles.
  • Guests are asked to maintain a physical distance of six feet (two metres) from other guests and WinSport Team Members wherever possible.
  • No one known to have COVID-19 symptoms or a positive test in the previous 14 days will be permitted on WinSport property.
  • Face coverings are mandatory in all indoor areas and mandatory in all outdoor common areas, including lift lines, on lifts, on magic carpets and in parking lots.

As COVID-19 has restricted everyone’s travel and recreation options, WinSport’s local, accessible family sport facilities are more important to Calgary than ever. Our team has worked hard to develop a safe reopening strategy. We are operating under direction from Alberta Health Services and The City of Calgary.

Safety is our top priority. If we treat COVID-19 prevention as a shared responsibility, we will be able to keep WinSport’s facilities open all winter. The sporting opportunities at Canada Olympic Park help thousands of Calgarians to stay healthy through the cold weather.

Please review the Covid-19 Safety Protocols below before visiting and follow all signage and instructions while you are here.

Let’s play safely together.

Protocols

Ski Hill

Capacity limits

We are limiting capacity in all facilities to ensure enough space for physical distancing. This includes selling day passes for the ski hill online only and capping pass sales.

To reduce congestion on the ski/snowboard hill, no foot traffic or spectators will be allowed anywhere on the hill. Similarly, spectators are not permitted in the stands in the ice arenas.

Please maintain a two-metre physical distance from others whenever possible. WinSport has put directional signage and other adaptations in place to make physical distancing easier.

Cleaning and sanitizing

WinSport’s cleaning protocols include regular sanitization of surfaces and equipment. Please be patient when areas are not accessible because they are being cleaned.

Hand sanitizer is provided at the entrances to buildings.

Face coverings

Face coverings are mandatory indoors and in all outdoor common areas while on WinSport property.

Please use good judgment on what constitutes an acceptable face covering. Face coverings typically used by skiers to protect skin from the cold may not be adequate. Thin, single-layer coverings or coverings with holes for the mouth or nose do not offer COVID-19 protection. Alberta Health Services provides helpful guidance here.

Outdoors

  • Face coverings are required in lift lines and on all lifts and carpets. They are also required during ski and snowboard lessons.
  • In all areas of the Frank King Day Lodge, including the back deck, face coverings are required. They may be removed when eating or drinking.
Face coverings are required when riding the tubes at the Tube Park.

Indoors

Face coverings are required in all public indoor spaces at WinSport, including the Frank King Day Lodge. Face coverings may be removed while eating or drinking.

WinSport staff must complete a health screening before every shift.

Hours of Operation

Hills and Lifts

Hills

  • The operation of hill and its associated facilities, including the Tube Park and the Frank King Day Lodge, will be guided by the rules and regulations set by the Government of Alberta and Alberta Health officials as they pertain to outdoor activity and worker safety. These may change throughout the season, as circumstances change.
  • There will be limited hill capacity.
  • There will be no spectators or access to the hill on foot this year.
  • Physical distancing of two metres will be maintained in lift lines, with each quad chair restricted to cohort groups or two singles at each end of the lift.
  • Hill hours may be modified or the hill closed due to inclement weather. These changes will be communicated on winsport.ca and via our social media channels.

Lifts

  • Face coverings are to be worn by all skiers and riders while on the lifts. They are also required during ski and snowboard lessons.
  • Cohorts are asked to lineup together and take the chair together. For those who are comfortable doing so, a ‘double-up’ line is available for two individuals to be seated on opposite ends of the chair.
  • Skis and snowboards act as natural physical distancing devices. Face coverings are therefore optional while skiing or snowboarding.
  • Surfaces are cleaned daily. Nonetheless, we encourage skiers and snowboarders to wear their gloves or mittens while riding the lifts.
Parking

Parking is available in the Frank King Day Lodge parking lot and the West Overflow Lot located west of the Markin MacPhail Centre.

We are looking into the safe operation of shuttles this season from the West Overflow Lot.

We ask all guests to dress for their day in the car and use their car as a hub to store bags and other personal items.

Snow School

All lesson participants (or their parent or guardian) must complete a daily health screening assessment before attending a WinSport Snow School Program. Participants will not be permitted to attend if they are ill or answer “yes” to any screening question.

A participant who develops symptoms during a lesson will immediately be isolated from the other participants. If need be, a parent or guardian must be available to pick the student up as soon as possible.

Face coverings are required for all snow school participants and instructors.

To reduce congestion, foot traffic and spectators are not permitted on the base of the hill this year.

We regret that pre-school lessons will not be offered this winter. For very young children, it is not possible to teach skiing and snowboarding without close physical contact.

Tube Park

Capacity limits

Sessions will be limited to specific timeslots this winter in order to manage capacity. We will not extend tickets past the allotted booked time, and no shows will not receive compensation/refunds.

To manage hill and tubing capacity for the safety of our staff and all participants, access to snow will be restricted this season. Access to the Tube Park will only be granted to those who have purchased a Tube Park Ticket and are actively engaged in the tubing activity. Spectators will not be permitted.

Please maintain a two-metre physical distance from others whenever possible. WinSport has put directional signage and other adaptations in place to make physical distancing easier.

Cleaning and sanitizing

All tubers will keep their own tube for the duration of the tubing session. Once the session is over, tubes will be thoroughly sanitized prior to the next session.

Helmets are recommended and will be available to rent – they will be thoroughly sanitized after each use.

Washrooms will be available at the Tube Park and will be cleaned/sanitized regularly.

Face Coverings

While onsite all individuals will be required to wear a face covering. This includes in the parking lot, walking to the Tube Park, during the use of the Tube Park, and while inside any building. A face covering means a mask or other face-covering that fully covers the nose, mouth, and chin.

All face coverings must be at least 2 layers of fabric. A face covering may include a winter face/neck covering (such as a Buff) as long as it has two layers of fabric covering your nose and mouth.

Markin MacPhail Centre

Arenas

WinSport has made the difficult but necessary decision to indefinitely suspend the operation of the arenas at the Markin MacPhail Centre.

This decision, which takes effect November 27, is in consideration of the guidelines set out Tuesday by the Government of Alberta.

This will be disappointing news to our valued arena users, especially those users that may be making applications for exemptions. However, we continue to make our decisions on two guiding principles – the health and safety of our team and guests, as well as the long-term health and sustainability of our organization.

WinSport is committed to doing our part to curb the upward trend in positive COVID-19 cases across the province. With the provincial order in effect until Dec. 15, 2020, we will review our operations at that time and determine a path forward.

We look forward to when we can open safely within approved guidelines and appreciate your continued patience as we work through these unprecedented times.

-----------------------

Face coverings are required in all public indoor spaces at WinSport. Face coverings may be removed in the following circumstances:

  • While eating or drinking
  • While playing on the arena ice and sitting on the team benches or in the penalty boxes

The dressing rooms for the arenas are open, but showers are closed. Teams must keep roster sizes small enough to permit physical distancing in the dressing rooms (for example, the WinSport Canada Hockey League, which is our adult recreational league, is restricting rosters to 12 players this winter).

Arena time blocks will be one hour, with 15 minutes of dressing room availability afterwards. Dressing rooms will be cleaned between users.

No spectators are permitted in the stands of the arenas.
