Leadership Program

WinSport recognizes leadership as a valuable component of the youth volunteer experience and positive youth development, and encourages youth to participate as active team members and leaders at WinSport. The Youth Leadership Program promotes growth and skill development necessary for successful youth leaders and ensures they are given the tools to succeed as volunteers at WinSport and as community members.

WinSport’s Youth Leadership Program includes leadership training (based on the City of Calgary’s LEAD program), the Youth Leadership Committee and Junior Facilitators.
Volunteers who have completed the interview process and been accepted into a volunteer position, are eligible to participate in WinSport’s Leadership Program. If you are interested in participating, please fill out the volunteer application form. Questions can be directed to volunteers@winsport.ca.

Youth Leadership Training

The Youth Leadership Training is based on the City of Calgary’s LEAD program and has been adapted for the WinSport volunteer program. The training is held on site throughout the year and is offered free of charge. Facilitators support the youth participants as they navigate through the nine modules of LEAD: Leadership, Communication, Conflict Management, Diversity, Leisure Education, Personal Wellness, Planning & Organizing, Problem Solving & Decision Making and Teamwork. Upon completion of the training component and 20 volunteer hours with a satisfactory evaluation, participants receive a LEAD Leadership Training certificate.

Volunteers between the ages of 13 -17 years of age are required to complete the Youth Leadership Training as a condition of volunteering. Upon completion of this program, youth are able to recognize the impact they can make as leaders and the difference they can make in their community.

WinSport’s Youth Leadership Training is open to volunteers who have applied and been accepted as WinSport volunteers. If you are interested in participating, please fill out the volunteer application form.

Youth Leadership Committee

Youth volunteers who have completed the Youth Leadership Training, have volunteered within WinSport’s programs, and have shown strong leadership capabilities may be asked to sit on the Youth Leadership Committee. The committee works with the Team & Culture, Advisor Volunteers on volunteer recruitment, screening, and recognition, and supporting the leadership training, all while advising on volunteer programs at WinSport. Youth can do amazing things and WinSport wants to help them grow.

Junior Facilitators

Junior Facilitators have completed the Youth Leadership Training, sat on the Youth Leadership Committee (YLC) and are now approaching or are already enrolled in post-secondary education. The Junior Facilitators support the leadership training and youth volunteers.
