Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are valued members of the WinSport team, providing essential support to various departments and activities. There are currently more than 650 volunteers each year at WinSport who help promote sport, and introduce children to active living. If you have a passion for sport, leadership or community, we are looking for you!

Volunteers are recruited on an ongoing basis for a wide variety of programs – both seasonal and year-round. Winter season positions are posted by September. Summer volunteer positions are posted by March. Opportunities are available to volunteer as an individual, family or with friends. Some opportunities may have limited availability, dependent on program needs.

Facilitator

WinSport provides additional training to volunteers ages 14-17 through the WinSport Youth Leadership Program. There are 9 modules including: Leadership, Communication, Personal Wellness, Teamwork, Diversity, Conflict Management, Problem Solving, Planning and Organization and Leisure Education. Facilitators work as a team to deliver the program to small learning groups of 15 youth volunteers. The program takes place over the course of four week day evenings. If you have a passion for leadership and inspiring youth then we'd love to talk to you!
Responsibilities
  • Plan and facilitate the training sessions based on the guidelines of WinSport and the LEAD program
  • Utilize the available space effectively during training
  • Establish positive relationships with the participants and act as a role model, demonstrating maturity and compassion at all times
  • Coordinate with the Human Resources Advisor, Volunteers to ensure supplies needed are available
  • Ensure a strong understanding of the LEAD program’s nine modules and how they relate to WinSport
  • Work with co-facilitators to ensure a positive delivery of the content
  • Redirect activities as needed, based on the needs of the group
  • Debrief with the Human Resources Advisor, Volunteers and facilitators, providing feedback and ideas to strengthening the program
  • Interact with guests, staff and fellow volunteers in a respectful and supportive manner
  • Attend training sessions, orientations and meetings as required
  • Demonstrate a safe work practice at all times by adhering to  all  WinSport safety policy and procedures and ensuring one’s own  safety is  preserved along with the safety of co-workers and WinSport guests
  • Be mindful of all safety hazards/concerns within the work environment and ensure all safety issues are reported to the appropriate individuals
  • Review all OH & S notices/meeting minutes as they are distributed or posted on OH & S boards located within each department

Volunteers are required to go through a screening process which includes an application, resume, and interview. All volunteers attend an orientation and training session(s).

Event Team

Event Team volunteers provides event day support to Catering, Sales and Events. Events vary in sizes and can include holiday parties, concerts, sporting events and corporate picnics.
Your Role
  • Direct guests to activities and seating
  • Host activities including bocce ball, bouncy house, arts and crafts, dunk tank, ball pit, sumo wrestling, horseshoes, video games, face painting
  • Assist with clearing tables,
  • Support set up and take down process
  • Other duties as assigned

PTC Attendant (18+)

The PTC Attendant plays an active role in the back ground of the customer service experience of the Performance Training Centre at WinSport.
Your Role
  • Support the ongoing clean up of the weight room
  • Provide attendant support to the change rooms, ensuring they are tidy and shampoo and conditioner containers are full
  • Ensure towels are stocked, washing and folding as needed
  • Opportunity to learn the inner workings of behind the scenes at a Performance Training Centre
  • Interact with guests, staff, and fellow volunteers in a respectful and supportive manner
  • Maintain a safe environment for all participants by modeling safe behavior
  • Provide additional assistance as required
  • Read and abide by all information provided at orientations and trainings
  • Attend training sessions, orientations and meetings as required
  • Demonstrate a safe work practice at all times by adhering to all WinSport safety policy and procedures and ensuring one’s own safety is preserved along with the safety of co-workers and WinSport guests
  • Be mindful of all safety hazards/concerns within the work environment and ensure all safety issues are reported to the appropriate individuals

  • Completion of standard first aid training is an asset

  • Shifts times range from 3-4 hour shifts
  • Week day mornings or evenings

Snow School Junior Instructor

The Snow School Junior Instructor is responsible for supporting Snow School by providing assistance to the instructor during lessons. The Junior Instructor plays an essential role in the success of WinSport’s Snow School programs, through delivering excellent customer service to our guests and working with the students to encourage development within the sport.
Your role will include (but is not limited to)
  • Greet and talk with the students and parents as they arrive for their training
  • Assist with directing students to lesson locations
  • Identify opportunities to assist the instructor and take initiative to assist
  • Make students and parents feel comfortable at beginning of class
  • Entertain the class with simple games while they are waiting for the lesson to start
  • Demonstrate the lesson on the request of the instructor
  • Assist instructors by accompanying the students on the lifts
  • Provide immediate assistance to students who have fallen
  • Assist with instilling a knowledge and respect for the Alpine Responsibility Code in the students
  • Work with primarily children 3-6 years old, but with demonstrated learning, may be assigned to other age groups
  • Provide additional assistance as requested by the instructor
  • Act as a mentor, being responsible and demonstrating maturity at all times
  • Read and abide by all information contained in the team member handbook
  • Attend training sessions, orientations and meetings as required
  • Refrain from instructing participants
  You are someone who
  • Is comfortable interacting with young children
  • Is a confident skier or snowboarder, and passionate about the sport
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction

Physical Demands
  • Fast paced outdoor environment
  • Four hour week night shifts and eight hour weekend shifts
  • Helping to lift students who have fallen (40-60lbs)

Team & Culture, Administration Support

The Team & Culture, Administration Support volunteer provides support to the Team & Culture department through assisting with various tasks, such as filing, staff IDs and paperwork collection.
Your role will include (but is not limited to)
  • Support various Team & Culture functions, including filing, collecting onboarding paperwork and other administration tasks as assigned
  • Provide backup coverage for the Front Reception desk, as needed

Welcome Team

The Welcome Team is often the first point of contact for our guests at WinSport. They provide support to guests through saying hi with a smile, answering questions, pointing (and walking) guests in the right direction and ensuring guests leave knowing they are welcome back.
Your role will include (but is not limited to)
  • Welcome guests to WinSport
  • Pro-actively approach guests and offer to assist and direct them to where they need to go
  • Answer any questions guests may have about events, programs and facilities
  • Approach guests who appear to be lost and ask if they require assistance
  • Monitor lineups to redirect guests as needed
  • Ensure guests are following WinSport equipment use guidelines and policies
  • Provide guests with up to date information about WinSport and available services
  • Attend training sessions, orientations and meetings as required
Physical Demands

  • Shifts of 3-5 hours

Leadership Program
WinSport recognizes leadership as a valuable component of the youth volunteer experience and positive youth development, and encourages youth to participate as active team members and leaders at WinSport. The Youth Leadership Program promotes growth and skill development necessary for successful youth leaders and ensures they are given the tools to succeed as volunteers at WinSport and as community members.

WinSport’s Youth Leadership Program includes leadership training (based on the City of Calgary’s LEAD program), the Youth Leadership Committee and Junior Facilitators.
Volunteers who have completed the interview process and been accepted into a volunteer position, are eligible to participate in WinSport’s Leadership Program. If you are interested in participating, please fill out the volunteer application form. Questions can be directed to volunteers@winsport.ca.

Youth Leadership Training
The Youth Leadership Training is based on the City of Calgary’s LEAD program and has been adapted for the WinSport volunteer program. The training is held on site throughout the year and is offered free of charge. Facilitators support the youth participants as they navigate through the nine modules of LEAD: Leadership, Communication, Conflict Management, Diversity, Leisure Education, Personal Wellness, Planning & Organizing, Problem Solving & Decision Making and Teamwork. Upon completion of the training component and 20 volunteer hours with a satisfactory evaluation, participants receive a LEAD Leadership Training certificate.

Volunteers between the ages of 13 -17 years of age are required to complete the Youth Leadership Training as a condition of volunteering. Upon completion of this program, youth are able to recognize the impact they can make as leaders and the difference they can make in their community.

WinSport’s Youth Leadership Training is open to volunteers who have applied and been accepted as WinSport volunteers. If you are interested in participating, please fill out the volunteer application form.

  • Session #3 Tuesdays  November 7, 14, 21 & 28  6-9pm
  • Session #4 Thursdays  January 18, 25, Feb 1, & 8  6-9pm
*Please note that all the dates in the session must be attended to receive the certificate of completion.

Youth Leadership Committee

Youth volunteers who have completed the Youth Leadership Training, have volunteered within WinSport’s programs, and have shown strong leadership capabilities may be asked to sit on the Youth Leadership Committee. The committee works with the Team & Culture, Advisor Volunteers on volunteer recruitment, screening, and recognition, and supporting the leadership training, all while advising on volunteer programs at WinSport. Youth can do amazing things and WinSport wants to help them grow.

Junior Facilitators
Junior Facilitators have completed the Youth Leadership Training, sat on the Youth Leadership Committee (YLC) and are now approaching or are already enrolled in post-secondary education. The Junior Facilitators support the leadership training and youth volunteers.
